Rathna comics ...Written by Haja Ismail

     Full History of Rathna Comics

1978, The day in the month of June, I was reading Dinamani news paper morning edition in the evening,

               Dinamani  Advertisement

An advertisement published in that surprised me a lot, Rathna Comics advised that “The Orient Litho Press”, a famous concern was planning to published Edger Rice Burroughs ”Tarzan comics in Tamil and appointing Mullai Thangarasan as it editor, from 15 Aug 1978 onwards

                        Edger Rice Burroughs

Here I have to tell a little about me. I am a comic fan and collecting all the comics’ books I read to till date.

Before Muthu comics published in 1972, Phantoms comics published in 1960 in Tamil were available in my home. Not only this, I am proud & happy that I bought and read whatever the comics were published in Tamil Nadu time to time.

As I love comics, I wished to see there are more comic’s readers and fan. From wherever the comics were published I brought them to my home town “Adiram Pattinam” and distributed them. Because of this, since 1975 till 1995, I was a famous “New Agent” in my Home  town.

My friends, you have note something here, I have done it without any benefit and I did it as a social service and it was a good time pass for me and my family. All the comics were available in my town which is rarely available even in big cities.

Upon seeing the ad in Dinamani, I have contacted Ratna comics office and agreed buy 25 copies books. They have started publishing it from 15 Aug 1978.

Rathna comics, first issue, Pazhivankum Mugamoodi (The Masked Avenger), published in attractive big (A4) Size, shining cover pages were sold out within two days. Due to this, I purchased 35 books of their second issue “Vibareeda Manidan” (The Mad Professor) and I have started buying 50 books and distributed.

              Letter from   Mullai Thangarasan

Again Mullai Thangarasan, and artist Chellam’s cooperation, Rathna comics published in Tamil language comics from the translation of Original Version of Tarzan with editing and good translation. Cover page, side art and dialogue were the handy works of famous artist Chellam alias Chellappan.

Though Ratna comics won readers support, but publisher they have not found enough to so interest on Rathna comics, when their “Rathna Bala”, the children monthly enjoyed a great success and the publishers forgotten all other things.

So Rathna comics  stopped after its 6th issue. Rathna comics last issue, Veerachiruvan (The Little Warrior) and the Ratna Bala’s first issue were published in January, 1979.

The Ratna comics 7th issue, “kadaththal Killadigal” (The bait) were divided in two and produced as small beautiful book and issued as free issue with Rathna Bala’s 1980 Jan & Feb issues.

It is significant to note that the Ratna Comics was published by "Vidyarthi Mithram Comics "
ARRANGEMENTS from Kerala’s Kottayam .

When Rathna comics published in this time period, Magic kingdom Stories written by Mullai Thangaras were also published by these publishers at Rs. 1.25. They were not missed out on back page advertisement of Rathna comics.

 Advertisement of Magic kingdom Stories

It may be due to the success of ‘Rathna Bala’ and Mullai Thangarasan & Ratna Nadar’s full involvement in Rathna Bala, from 1979 Jan issued onwards, Ratna comics was abruptly stopped without any prior notice.

                                        Ratna Nadar

After some time, due to the misunderstanding, Mullai Thangarasan he resigned from his editor job of Rathna Bala and joined “Mani Pappa” children monthly, published in sivakasi, by Anil Publications price at Rs. 1.25.
Which was earlier published by mullai Thangarasan at 35 Paise? Through Mathi nilayam in Chennai.

In this situation, it was announced that the Rathna comics  to start soon by the Head Rathna Nadar’s son S. Jai Shankar’s through NPS publication on Pongal day 1991 and in this

1. Puyal Veeran
2. SadiLetto
3. Parka bin

The named hero’s are to appear at Rs. 2.00. As agent, we have paid money and waiting but the comics did not come.

Then we received an announcement again, it was due to some unavoidable reason, the issue will come in 1991 April instead of 1991 January but again it did not happen.

There was another announcement, in this; “Sasi Comics” instead of “Rathna Comics” will be started issuing from 1991 Sep and the price to be Rs. 3.00. But this time, the issue has come but little late in Oct 1991.
Buck Jones appeared as Hero, only one comics was published and after that nothing followed. After some time, Rathna Bala, the children issue also has got stopped.
